The Conservative record on health care is hazardous.
The last Conservative Prime Minister was Stephen Harper — and he made a campaign promise to maintain health care funding. But then, once elected, Conservatives (including their new leader, Erin O’Toole) ruthlessly cut $36 billion from provincial health care transfers.
The Conservative Premier of Alberta, Jason Kenney, promised to maintain or increase health care funding. Then he got elected and slashed health care funding – and now is laying off up to 11,000 health care workers in the middle of a pandemic.
Conservative Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, promised no public service job losses. Then he got elected and laid off health care workers and slashed health research funding.
Conservative Premier of Manitoba, Brian Pallister, promised to protect frontline health care. Then he fired nurses and closed Emergency Rooms.
What’s crystal clear is that Conservatives will make false promises to get elected and then cut health care once in power. The proof is in the pudding.
Erin O’Toole and the Conservatives would cut our health care at the worst possible time. He’s done it before, and he’ll do it again.
